Children of the Sky
Aniela Onuoha
My name is Aniela Onuoha, I've been in Ottawa Canada my whole life- I was born here… for me I feel like the tragic death of George Floyd wasn’t necessarily a wake-up call but, made me want to go out and make a difference, and I think it was like that for a lot of people.
My painting is about black children, specifically protecting black children. I feel like in this society the beauty standards are very Euro-Centric. Black beauty and black children are not always included and I feel like that can be damaging when you are growing up, It can kinda cause some self-hatred. Oftentimes, darker-skinned men and women are portrayed as less human. Especially as children, they are most vulnerable. I believe it's important to uplift them.
I think it's crazy that this social concept of classification based on race and class effects so much. Also crazy that just because someone has a different skin tone simple things such as going for a run can be harmful. I think that is one of the reasons why I think it is so important that we vote, especially young people because we are the future and I think we can make a lot of change
